Can the line withstand the wind?

In strong crosswind, especially when ice has built up on the conductor, an overhead line can develop large, low-frequency oscillations known as galloping. These can bring phases into contact and damage fittings.

    Galloping of overhead conductors

A finite element model of a single conductor under quasi-steady aerodynamic forces, used to study when galloping starts and how large it grows. Bundled conductors are the planned next step.
